What’s that bump?? – Bartholin’s Cysts Explained

Updated: Oct 31, 2019

It’s STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) Awareness Month and we wanted to talk about something that actually isn’t an STD but is often mistaken for on; the Bartholin’s cyst. When performing your usual STD check or generally have a check of your yoni for any lumps, bumps or changes in skin texture you might actually come across a little bump – don’t panic! It’s not always herpes, it could actually be a completely harmless Bartholin’s cyst that’s become a little blocked. Keep reading to find out more and EmpressBody’s recommendation for treating them at home.

But what is a Bartholin’s Cyst?

A Bartholin's cyst, also called a Bartholin's duct cyst, is a small fluid-filled sac just inside the opening of the yoni. You may feel a soft, painless lump which usually doesn’t cause any problems. However, if the cyst grows very large, it can become noticeable and uncomfortable. You may feel pain in the skin surrounding the vagina (vulva) when you walk, sit down or have sex.

The cyst can sometimes affect the outer pair of lips surrounding the yoni (labia majora). One side may look swollen or bigger than usual. If the cyst becomes infected, it can cause a painful collection of pus (abscess) to develop in one of the Bartholin's glands. Signs of an abscess include the affected area becoming red, swollen, tender and hot. It can also cause a high temperature of 38C or above.

What can cause them?

The Bartholin's glands are a pair of pea-sized glands found just behind and either side of the lips that surround the entrance to the vagina. The glands aren't usually noticeable because they're rarely larger than 1cm (0.4 inches) across.

The Bartholin's glands secrete fluid that acts as a lubricant during sex. The fluid travels down tiny tubes called ducts, into the vagina. If the ducts become blocked, they can fill with fluid and expand to form a cyst.

It's often not known why the ducts become blocked, but some cases are linked to sexually transmitted bacterial infections (STIs) such as

· gonococcus, which causes gonorrhea

· Chlamydia trachomatis, which causes Chlamydia

· Escherichia coli, which can affect water supply and cause hemorrhagic colitis

· Streptococcus pneumonia, which can cause pneumonia and middle ear infections

· Haemophilus influenzae (HIB), which can cause ear infections, and respiratory infections

EmpressBody Recommends:

Initially, we would advise for women experiencing a swollen or blocked Bartholin’s Cyst to do a full detox of 6 Detox Pearls.

EmpressBody pearls work by the specially selected herbs creating a pulling effect that draws toxins, bad bacteria, dead cells, old bloodclots, mucus and more from your yoni, while at the same time tightening your yoni and deterring vaginal dryness and other ailments.

We also recommend that women use a small warm amount of EmpressBody Yoni Elixir Oil as this has key ingredients such as tea tree and frankincense that help alleviate symptoms with their antiseptic benefits. Please do not put the bottle in the microwave and be sure that oil is not too hot, rub liberally on the area every morning and night.

You could also try yoni steaming daily or as often as possible, as thus will help to naturally rupture the Bartholin cyst and ease discomfort.

If symptoms persist please check with a physician if your cyst is infected.
