Ever wondered if your yoni is normal?

Updated: Sep 20, 2019

For many of us, learning about our yoni was a rushed and awkward affair at school lead by a teacher who would rather be anywhere else rather than helping you know what’s going on down there. EmpressBody is dedicated to knowledge and body acceptance and we want to help everyone know what’s normal for your yoni and how you can take care of her. There is a lot of pressure for a yoni to look completely symmetrical and perfect, a standard set by the porn industry that is leading to increased numbers in labia surgery or labiaplasty – and no one should feel self conscious of their yoni, they’re beautiful and unique. Keep reading to find out more about what’s normal for a yoni and how EmpressBody can help you look after yours.

So what’s normal?

We like to say ‘yoni’ but you may call it a ‘vagina’, ‘flower’ or whatever you like! But many people are confused about the general layout of genitals. Many people say ‘vagina’ when they’re actually talking about the vulva. The vulva is the outside, visible part of your genitals — your labia (lips), clitoris, vaginal opening, and the opening to your urethra (the hole you pee out of). The vagina is the inside.

Really, there’s no standard for what’s normal when it comes to your vulva. Everyone’s is completely different; the labia can be different sizes, or puffy, dangly, big, small – the possibilities are endless!

Some people have wide vaginal openings, and other people don’t. The clitoris can also be different from person to person, some are big or small, and it may stick out or be tucked away under what is known as the ‘clitoral hood’. It’s also common for a vulva to be asymmetrical (when one side looks different than the other). And vulvas come in a whole rainbow of skin colors, from dark brown, red, pink, purple, tan and a wide range of textures too!

And what about vaginal discharge?

We all have vaginal discharge (wet stuff that comes out of your yoni)! It’s an unavoidable fact of life. It can look clear, white, or slightly yellow, especially when it dries on underwear. Around your period, it may be brown or pink (this is sometimes called “spotting.”) Your vaginal discharge changes throughout your menstrual cycle. Some days you’ll have more discharge than others, and it may get thicker or thinner, or change color a little bit. Most discharge is totally normal — it’s part of your vagina’s way of cleaning itself.

Everyone’s vaginal discharge has a smell – that’s completely normal! If it’s slightly stronger than usual you may have a UTI or a yeast infection, again these are very common and easy to treat! It is unwise to douche to try and get rid of the smell as these can upset your delicate yoni flora and pH balance!

When things are getting hot and steamy and you’re sexually stimulated, your yoni produces a natural lubricant that helps reduce friction when having sex. This is also totally normal! Some people are very easily stimulated and produce a lot of natural lubrication, and some people produce less, still totally normal. If you are experiencing a sudden change in your ability to ‘get wet’ you might be under stress. EmpressBody has designed a specially formulated holistic guide on how to rebalance yourself.

What’s the best way to clean my vagina and vulva?

With myriad different types of vulvas out there you’d think there would be a myriad of ways to clean them, but there’s only one rule you need to remember; be gentle, clean the external areas only and try and use organic washes. You don’t need to clean the inside of your vagina — it already cleans itself!
